Switch career from support engineer to developer role

0 votes
Hi All, I joined as a fresher and worked as a technical support engineer for 1.5 years in a company. Now I want to switch to a Java or full-stack developer role either in the same company or a different company. I have skills in web technologies HTML, CSS, JS, PHP and programming skills on Java, R. Can anyone suggest certifications or course that I can take to increase my chances to crack the interview?

Hi prabath, Switching from support to developer is easy if you are applying for a job that required similar background experience and skills. The more experience you have, better the chances for cracking the job. But you find work a little off for a few days or weeks. The job of a developer is quite different from a support engineer. One more point to keep in mind is the hands-on coding or programming experience rather than support experience to work as a developer. So try to switch within the same company into a development role or try for a smaller company or startup company that is hiring for developers.

Hey @Prabath your idea of switching to being a full stack developer from having worked as a support engineer is indeed commendable.

The skills that you have acquired  will definitely be a game changer for your career aspirations.

Just make sure you have a hold of the technologies that you mention in your resume and also try to get certified in a few technologies that you are familiar with, probably in Java and other front end technologies that you already know.

This would probably give you an edge over others in cracking the interview.

All the best!

When you say get hold of the technologies, what exactly do you mean by that?

I have created two websites using HTML, CSS, PHP and javascript. Is that much enough? Or do I need some more projects or certificates?

Hey Prabhath, there are a lot of certifications or courses available in the market now a days, but its important to figure out which one would be valuable and good for you. First of all figure out which specific tech stack you are interested in and what kind of job role you wish to take. Now, you can either take any certification course from some reputed online web developer course providing companies like Edureka, Udemy etc or you can take certification from big IT companies like AWS or Microsoft or Oracle certification.
