Can a 42-year-old get into cybersecurity without an IT background

I’m 42 years old and interested in switching to a career in cybersecurity, but I don’t have a formal IT background. Most of my experience is in a completely different field, and I’m wondering if it’s realistic to pursue a cybersecurity career at this stage of my life.

Is it possible to break into the cybersecurity industry without prior IT experience, and if so, where should I start? What certifications or learning paths would be most beneficial for someone in my situation, and are there any age-related challenges I should be aware of?

Absolutely, you can break into the Cybersecurity field at the age of 42, even without an IT background. I've seen many people who have transitioned from various fields to Cybersecurity through their experience and perspective.

Now, when you're starting out:

1. I would suggest you to understand the different domains and roles that we have in Cybersecurity such as Web Application Security, Cloud Security where you can apply for roles like Penetration Tester, Cloud Security Engineer, and so. This would really help you in identifying where your interest lie.

2. Next, I would suggest you to go through Edureka's Cybersecurity Roadmap YouTube Video. It will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the skills, certifications and roles available in every domain of this field.

3. You might also check out the Cybersecurity Roadmap Blog on the Edureka website which provides a detailed information about how you should begin with.

4. Next, gaining the foundational knowledge is important, begin with a Foundational Course in Cybersecurity just like we offer at Edureka. We offer training on all the essential topics like networking, security principles, and ethical hacking.

5. Consider pursuing certifications to validate your skills:

  • CompTIA Security+ is something I refer you to begin with as it covers all the fundamental security concepts and is a great for all the people starting in Cybersecurity.
  • CEH is ideal if you're interested in offensive security and penetration testing.
  • And, CISSP is for those who are looking to move ahead into managerial roles later on.

Edureka provides training on all these certifications helping you upskill yourself in this field.

This is really helpful! But I’m wondering, how difficult is it to transition to a managerial role like CISSP without having years of technical experience? Is it realistic to aim for that in the first few years?
