Hi. I recently upgraded from Hadoop 1.0 to Hadoop 2.0 and there is something called a StandBy Node. Is this a daemon?

StandBy NameNode is not a separate daemon. Instead it is a state of NameNode. Actually, The standby NameNode and the active NameNode keep in sync with each other through a separate group of nodes or daemons called JournalNode. So Journal node is the daemon behind this process.
