For change in the file format, you can go with the below command:

sqoop import --connect 'jdbc:sqlserver://dbserver;database=dbname' --username someusername --password somepassword --as-avrodatafile  --table DimSampleDesc --warehouse-dir /dataload/tohdfs/reio/odpdw/may2016 --verbose
