How can I improve the accuracy of anomaly detection in Power BI?
I’m using Power BI’s anomaly detection, but the results are not always reliable or relevant. What are the key techniques or adjustments I can make to improve its accuracy? Should I tweak data granularity, use cleaner data, or apply specific time series configurations?

The preparation of data and the selection of appropriate ways of looking at the data determine the success of anomaly detection in Power BI equally well. Given that anomaly detection in Power BI is based on statistical models applied to time series data, any inconsistency or noise in the dataset may result in false positives or missed detections.

1. Data Granularity Refinement

The basis of anomaly detection is clear time-oriented patterns. If your dataset is highly granular—for example, minute-level data with occasional spikes—then start aggregating it to hourly, daily, or weekly levels with a view to reducing the noise and returning the important trend. However, if the scale is extremely wide, it might mask short-term anomalies, so try finding a mid-ground depending on your use case.

2. Data Quality and Completeness

Clean and consistent data improves the reliability of the model. Use Power Query to fill gaps in the time series, remove outliers, and manage timestamps that are either missing or are duplicated. Also, ensure that your date column is formatted and sorted correctly; even small irregularities in date sequencing can result in huge confusion for the algorithm.

3. Visual Configuration Optimization

The viewer should focus on a line chart plotting a single metric on the Y-axis and a Date/Time field on the X-axis. Do not let unnecessary lines or fields clutter your visuals. In the Analytics pane, adjust sensitivity to give control over making anomalies easy to detect:

  • Low sensitivity detects only serious deviations.
  • High sensitivity makes the detection of subtle changes possible.
