Subtotal and Sum gives different result

I'm totally at a loss with this strange problem. How is it possible that the results produced by these two formulas differ?

=SUBTOTAL(9;W5:W394) and =SUM(W5:W394)

The Subtotal results in 0, while Sum calculates correctly. Any ideas?
