What is iam role in aws

I am new to AWS and cloud computing. So, I was going to my aws management console and found this IAM thing. It is supposed to be super critical but I didn't understand it to be honest. I have successfully created ec2 instances without  the need for IAM. I just wanted to know like what is it and what are the use cases of it?
