What is the difference between SVG and HTML5 Canvas

What is the distinction between SVG and HTML5 Canvas? They both appear to have the same effect on me. They both draw vector artwork with coordinate points.

What am I overlooking? What are the primary distinctions between SVG and HTML5 Canvas? Why should I choose between the two?
