Introduction to Perl

Perl is a sophisticated, general purpose programming language with a rich software development environment. . It is a family of high-level, general-purpose, interpreted and dynamic programming languages for e.g. Perl 5 and Perl 6. A typical simple use of Perl would be for extracting information from a text file and printing out a report or for converting a text file into another form. Perl also provides a large number of tools for quite complicated problems, including systems programming. The programs written in Perl are known as Perl scripts.

Why learn Perl Scripting?

Perl is platform independent, high level and easy to use. Programmers love Perl because it is designed to make the difficult jobs easy, without making these difficult jobs impossible. Perl is a portable and scalable language that provides better structure for large programs than any other computer language. It is a simple structure, a clearly defined syntax and relatively few keywords that allows the student to pick up the language in a relatively short period of time. Debug Perl is relatively easy with its built-in debugger. Perl is one of the three P’s in the LAMP stack. According to eweek.com,  “Perl is used in virtually 100 percent of the Fortune 500, in a wide range of mission-critical systems”. According to Active Perl, there are 2,00,000 ActivePerl downloads each month.
